Soularie's monster day helps Kernels take five of six in Peoria

Peoria, IL – Cedar Rapids second baseman Alerick Soularie accounted for all six runs as the Kernels took the series finale from Peoria 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. Soularie went 2-for-3 with three runs scored, a triple, a home run and four RBI while John Stankiewicz earned his fifth win of the season – second as a Kernel – with 5.0 innings of two-run ball. The Kernels outscored Peoria 47-12 in the six-game series while taking five of six, improving to 24-9 on the year.

Stankiewicz tossed 5.0 frames and scattered seven hits, walking one while striking out five. He pounded the zone with 57 strikes on 82 pitches.

Soularie opened the scoring with a two-run, two-out home run blasted out to deep left-center in the second. With two outs in the fourth, Wander Javier singled and Kyler Fedko walked then Soularie crushed a two-run triple off the right field wall. Alerick scored on a wild pitch a bit later, making it 5-0 Kernels.

Peoria scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth to cut their deficit to two. Soularie wasn’t finished as he led off the seventh with a walk, moved to second on a groundout, stole third then scored on a Will Holland RBI groundout.

Cody Laweryson worked 2.0 innings of one-hit ball, striking out three to earn his fourth hold of the season. Miguel Rodriguez tossed a scoreless eighth, giving way to Melvi Acosta who worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save.

The Kernels are idle on Monday before opening a 12-game homestand on Tuesday evening with a 6:35 p.m. CT start against Lake County at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
