The Hartford Yard Goats loaded the bases in the eighth and ninth innings, but the Richmond Flying Squirrels held off the threat for a 4-3 victory on Wednesday night at The Diamond in Richmond Virginia. Trailing 4-1 after three innings, the Yard Goats got a run in the fourth inning, and Ezequiel Tovar’s RBI double in the eighth inning put Hartford within one. However, reliever Ryan Walker got Tovar to ground out to end the game with the bases loaded in the ninth, ending the Yard Goats three-game win streak.

The Flying Squirrels scored three runs with two outs in the second inning off Hartford starter Noah Gotsis. After retiring the first five batters, Gotsis walked Tyler Fitzgerald. Shane Matheny followed with a single, and Brandon Martorano cracked a two-run triple scoring Fitzgerald and Matheny and helping Richmond to a 2-0 lead. Jacob Heyward continued the rally with an RBI double making it 3-0.

The Yard Goats got a run in the third inning off Richmond starter Blake Rivera. Tyler Hill walked, stole second base, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a grounder by Jimmy Herron to make it 3-1. After the Flying Squirrels scored a run in the bottom of the third, the Yard Goats made it 4-2 on a sacrifice fly by Aaron Schunk in the fourth inning.

Hartford loaded the bases in the eighth inning on a double and two walks and Chris Wright struck out Aaron Schunk to end the threat. Daniel Cope led off the ninth inning with a double and went to third on a flyout. Tyler Hill and Jimmy Herron both walked against Chris Wright. Richmond brought in Ryan Walker to face Ezequiel Tovar with the bases loaded and got him to ground out to second to end the game.

The Yard Goats continue their six-game series with the Giants affiliate, the Richmond Flying Squirrels, on Thursday night at 6:35. RHP Michael Baird will start for the Yard Goats and RHP Kai-Wei Teng will start for the Flying Squirrels. The game will be broadcast on Newsradio 1410 WPOP. The Yard Goats return to Dunkin' Donuts Park on Tuesday, May 31st at 7:05 to host the Phillies affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils.
