The Fresno Grizzlies (49-41) swept the doubleheader to take two of three from the Reno Aces (54-36) with a 9-2 win in the second seven-inning game on Saturday. Tony Kemp extended his hit streak to 17 games with a RBI single in the third to tie Derek Fisher for the second-longest hit streak for a Grizzly this season. Juan Centeno has the longest at 21 games.
Fresno jumped ahead 2-0 in the second before a nine-batter, five-run third gave them a 7-0 lead. A.J. Reed (3-for-4) launched a three-run bomb to right field, his 15th home run of the season. It was Reed's eighth three-RBI game of 2017. Tyler White (2-for-4) also drove in a run while Alejandro Garcia (2-for-3) drove in two, one in each inning.
The Aces would tally two runs in the fourth to cut the Fresno lead to 7-2. A Christian Walker (2-for-3) RBI single and a Zach Borenstein sacrifice fly did the job. The Grizzlies increased their lead to 8-2 in the fifth on a Garcia single that scored Teoscar Hernández (2-for-3). For Garcia it was his third RBI of the night for his first three-RBI game of the season. It was also the third run scored for Hernandez, his second game of 2017 having scored three times.
The Grizzlies made the final score 9-2 when Colin Moran (3-for-4) led off the sixth with a solo home run off the batter's eye for his 18th of the season. RHP Kyle Smith (2-0) earned the win in the start allowing two runs on five hits with a strikeout. He did not walk a batter through five innings. Reno starter Braden Shipley (5-4) suffered the loss in four innings allowing seven runs on 10 hits and three walks without a strikeout.
Fresno will begin a four-game series with the Tacoma Rainiers at Cheney Stadium on July 13 at 7:05 p.m. following the All-Star Break. The series will be part of an eight-game road trip that includes a four-game set with the Las Vegas 51s at Cashman Field.
