JUPITER, Fla. — After an extra-day hiatus, baseball returned to its normal schedule on Thursday evening. Both teams traded runs in the seventh inning, as Jupiter snagged the suspended game from Tuesday night, 4-3, while Hammerheads' pitching limited Daytona to one hit in the finale, as the Tortugas fell, 5-0, at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.
Tuesday's contest was suspended after a 44-minute delay due to unplayable field conditions prior to the start of the third inning. The game resumed on Thursday with Daytona (8-17, 37-53) trailing Jupiter (14-12, 48-42), 3-2.
Daytona had squirted out to an early 2-0 advantage in the top of the first on a two-run home run to right by C Hayden Jones (2-4, R, HR, 2 RBI, 2 SO). However, before the rain came, Jupiter snagged three runs on a hit-by-pitch of LF T**anner Allen* (0-2, RBI), a fielder's choice from DH *Angeudis Santos* (0-1, R, RBI, 2 BB), and a single by SS *Yiddi Cappe** (2-4, 2B, RBI).
It remained a 3-2 affair until the Tortugas drew even in the top of the seventh. With the bases empty and two out, LF Rafael Franco (0-2, R, BB) earned a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
RF *Fidel Castro *(1-3, SO) followed with a ground ball to third, but instead of making the play to first to end the inning, the third baseman put Franco into a rundown. After chasing the Chihuahua, Mexico native towards second, he flipped the ball to the shortstop, but as Franco turned to head back to third, he realized no one was covering the base. The outfielder slid in safely on the fielder's choice, creating runners at first and third, with two out.
That fielding gaffe proved costly, as a wild pitch with 2B Luis Chevalier (0-3, 2 SO) at the plate scored Franco and knotted the game at three.
It would not stay tied for long, though. Santos drew a free pass for Jupiter with one out in their half of the seventh and scooted all the way to third on a double to left-center from Cappe. A sacrifice fly to right from 2B Javier Sanoja (0-3, RBI) put the Hammerheads back in the driver's seat, 4-3.
Daytona was retired in order in the final two frames, securing the 4-3 for Jupiter.
Neither of the starters from Tuesday factored into the decision. The Tortugas' RHP Julian Aguiar (2.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, BB, SO) and the Hammerheads' RHP Edgar Sánchez (2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 SO) each lasted a pair of frames before weather altered plans.
Jupiter's LHP Sandro Bargallo (5.0 IP, H, R, ER, 3 BB, 8 SO), despite suffering a blown save, yielded just one hit and struck out a career-high-tying eight over five innings of relief, earning his second victory of the season.
RHP Frainger Aranguren (2.0 IP, H, R, ER, 2 BB, SO) suffered his first defeat with the Tortugas after rejoining the roster from the Arizona Complex League on Tuesday.
In game two, the Hammerheads wasted no time in grabbing the lead. 2B Javier Sanoja (3-3, 3 R, HR, RBI) smashed a single through the left side of the infield and promptly came around to score on a double off the left-field fence from CF Brady Allen (1-1, 2B, 2 RBI, BB).
Sanoja created havoc for Daytona again in the third. With no runners aboard and two out in the third, the 19-year-old charged a ball beyond the left-field wall for a solo home run. Sanoja's second blast with Jupiter in 2022 doubled their lead to 2-0.
Jupiter continued to tack on in the fifth. SS Yiddi Cappe (1-4, R) ignited a rally with an infield single and moved to third on a knock to center by Sanoja. An errant throw from center allowed Cappe to score and Sanoja to scoot to third, giving the Hammerheads a 3-0 advantage. A sacrifice fly to right by Brady Allen made it a 4-0 contest.
The Hammerheads added one last tally in the sixth. DH Federico Polanco (1-2, R, 2B, BB) doubled down the left-field line to start the inning and quickly scored on a single to center by 3B Carlos Santiago (1-3, RBI).
Daytona's offense never quite got in gear in the finale. CF Ashton Creal (1-2, BB) led off the contest for the Tortugas with a single and stole a pair of bases in the first. However, the New Lenox, Ill. native was stranded a third. Daytona had two more baserunners on a DH Hayden Jones (0-2, SO) hit-by-pitch in the first and a walk to Creal in the sixth the rest of the way.
LHP Justin Fall (5.0 IP, H, 2 SO) retired the final 14 hitters he faced for Jupiter, hurling five shutout innings for his fifth win of the season.
RHP *anner Cooper (4.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 2 BB) was taxed for only two runs but was saddled with his third defeat for Daytona.
The Tortugas will try to return to the win column on Friday, as RHP Sam Benschoter (2-2, 4.54) is expected to make his first start back with the club since being reinstated from the injured list on Wednesday. RHP Jake Walters (1-0, 2.87) is scheduled to oppose him for the Hammerheads.
