After surrendering a combined 24 runs through the first two games of their series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the Blue Rocks looked to change their fortune on Thursday.
Wilmington starter Andrew Alvarex held down the Greensboro bats through the first three, allowing the Blue Rocks to strike in the bottom half of the third.
A walk from Geraldi Diaz and a single from Jordy Barley put two runners on for the speedy Daylen Lile. Adding to his single during his first at-bat, Lile split the right-centerfield gap to score both runners and tread safely into third base.
Lile would then score on a sacrifice fly from Viandel Pena to make it a 3-0 Blue Rocks lead. This was Wilmington’s first lead of the series.
Alvarez would continue to deal. In the fifth inning, he would strike out the side on just 11 pitches. His night would conclude after throwing six shutouts innings, surrendering only three hits, one walk, and tallied six strikeouts.
Marlon Perez was tasked to keep the game scoreless in relief. He threw two scoreless innings while striking out three Grasshoppers.
In the top of the ninth, Greensboro would load the bases with two outs, and score two on a single from Erny Ordonez.
Holden Powell would hold on, however, striking out the next batter looking, securing the 3-2 Blue Rocks lead.
Daylen Lile finished the day with four hits, two RBIs and a run scored.
The two squads will be back at it on Friday at 6:35 p.m.
